Mo re than 10 million viewers tuned in to watch Julie Hesmondhalgh's cha racter, Hayley Cropper, commit suicide in a controversial right-to-die plot in January.

The actress joined the soap in 1998 to play its first transsexual and won the hearts of the nation with her on-screen romance with cafe owner Roy, played by David Neilson.

The couple are both nominated - for best actress and best actor respectively - and Neilson is also nominated for best dramatic performance.

They are also nominated for best on-screen partnership, best storyline and best single episode.

EastEnders newcomer Danny Dyer is up for the sexiest male award, best actor and best on-screen partnership with his soap wife Kellie Bright.

The moment where his son Johnny, played by Sam Strike, came out as gay is also in the running to be named the year's most spectacular scene.

She faces competition from co-star Georgia May Foote, EastEnders' Jacqueline Jossa and Jennifer Metcalfe and Jorgie Porter from Hollyoaks.

The awards, now in their 16th year, are being hosted by Phillip Schofield at London's Hackney Empire theatre and will shown on ITV tomorrow night.
