ALEX Jones became the first Tiverton ABC boxer to win a junior Western Counties title with a unanimous points decision in Bristol on Sunday.

Jones, who was boxing Walcot’s John Boulton in the 52-54kgs category, started the first round in his customary all-action style.

Boulton was trying to get a foothold in the bout but his relentless body punching was already taking its toll.

Jones weathered a fightback by Boulton in the second, keeping a tight guard and landing shots when the chace came, and emerged a clear winner.

Coach Paul Harvey said: “Alex is a credit to the club and fully deserved his win. He never misses a training session does his roadwork in all weathers and is absolutely brilliant.”

Clubmate Corey Westbrook lost on points in the 57-60kg semi-final against Barnstaple’s Liam Laird.

Aaron Edwardes faced a really tough task as he was up against Walcot’s England ABA champion Tommy McDonagh in the 70-75kg semi-final.

Edwardes put up a gallant and gutsy performance and pushed McDonagh all the way over three very competitive rounds but it wasn’t enough.
