GOLF: Gibson breezes to cup success at Tiverton

YOUNGSTER Alex Gibson carded a five-under nett 66 to win the men’s Johnstone Cup at a sunny but breezy Tiverton on Saturday.

Gibson recovered from scoring eights on the 3rd and 12th to top Division Two and beat Kevin Harper, Alex McFerren and Ollie Taylor on a countback overall.

The Blundell’s School student had his handicap cut from 19 to 17 while Harper went from five to four, McFerren from 10 to nine and Taylor from four to three for the first time.

Taylor and Rhys Cruse both broke par with one-under gross 70s while Simon Young had a hole-in-one on the 9th.

Results: Division One - 1 Kevin Harper (71-5=66); 2 Alex McFerren (76-10=66); 3 Ollie Taylor (70-4=66); 4 Ricky Hall (76-9=67); 5 Dean Farmer (78-11=67); 6 Simon Young (75-8=67). Division Two - 1 Alex Gibson (85-19=66); 2 Kevin Ruscoe (85-18=67); 3 Steven Kelly (84-16=68); 4 Andy Hill (87-19=68); 5 Mike Blackmore (84-15=69); 6 Paul Mitchell (86-17=69).

Ollie Taylor posted an excellent three-under gross 68 on his way to winning Division One in the men’s August Midweek Stableford on Monday.

The three-handicapper birdied the 1st, 3rd, 9th, 11th and 15th in his score of 42 points, which left him two ahead of Dale Flint and Nixie Acfield.

Michael Spiller and Dan Smith led the way in Division Two, also with 42.

Tony Allsopp and his guest posted a nett 63 to win the Men’s Invitation for the George Crews Salver, beating Simon Budden and his partner on a countback.

Nicola Chilcott came in with 39 points to win the ladies’ August Stableford. Chilcott topped the Silver Division and had her handicap cut from 12 to 11.

Ed Tansey scored 40 points to win the veterans’ August Stableford on Tuesday.
