GOLF: Tiverton starlet lands Devon Under-14s title
Tiverton golfer Tom Trowbridge is the new Devon under-14s champion.
The 13-year-old posted gross scores of 85 and 91 in difficult conditions for a total of 176 in the Devon Boys' Championships at Saunton.
Harry Konig was the highest Tiverton finisher overall, coming ninth with rounds of 80 and 79 for a 159 total.
In the Junior Open at Thurlestone, Konig came second in the under-18 boys' scratch event while Trowbridge was runner-up in the under-14 section.
Grace Jackson claimed the girls' scratch prize.
Trowbridge, who plays off seven, was a member at Downes Crediton before moving to Tiverton earlier this year.
The Hutcheon family swept the board in the Adult/Junior Foursomes event at Tiverton on Sunday.
Mum Ruth and son Calum won with 46 Stableford points while dad Paul and daughter Kayleigh were the runners-up on 42.
Both pairs qualified for the Devon Adult/Junior Foursomes final at Wrangaton in September.
Neil Carthew and Bethany Baker came third with 40 points on a day when 36 pairs braved persistent rain to take part.
The juniors enjoyed two 4½-1½ wins against Padbrook Park in successive days in the East Devon League.
Tiverton won at home last Friday thanks to victories for captain Harry Konig, Nixie Acfield, Alex Trepess and debutant Alex Gibson plus a half for Ben Hearn.
They repeated the feat on away soil on Saturday, with Konig, Daniel Perry, Tom Waldron and debutant Jay Buckingham getting the wins.
George Sampson, also making his debut, earned the half.
The victory guarantees Tiverton's progress to the finals day as group winners with two games against Honiton still to play.
Tony Allsopp had his handicap cut from six to five after winning the men's June Midweek Stableford on Monday with 41 points.
Allsopp, who had twos on the 4th and 9th, topped Division One by one from Kim Garnsworthy and Neil Williams.
Results: Division One – 1 Tony Allsopp (41); 2 Kim Garnsworthy (40); 3 Neil Williams (40); 4 Rhys Cruse (39); 5 Shaun White (39); 6 Ollie Taylor (38). Division Two – 1 Craig Aitchison (39); 2 Will Roberts (38); 3 Jay Buckingham (37); 4 Bob Cumes (36); 5 Ian Postles (36); 6 Martin Taggart (36).
Dainton Park has been named as the venue for Tiverton's Palairet Trophy third-round match against Thurlestone on Sunday, July 1.
