Tiverton Town suffered their first defeat of 2010 as they went down 2-1 away to runaway leaders Farnborough Town in the Premier Division of the Southern League.
The Yellows had taken the lead through Jamie Hatch’s first goal for the club but the highflying hosts hit back with two strikes midway through the first half, which saw them take the three points.
Tiverton had already gone close through Colin Marshall and Tom Gardner before Hatch converted Alex Faux’s left-wing cross to give them the lead on 12 minutes.
However Farnborough, nine points clear at the top with games in hand, hit back 11 minutes later when Dean McDonald glanced a header past Steve Book.
It took them just two minutes to go in front as Book’s mis-hit clearance fell to Daryl McMahon just outside the area and he fired a low shot into the net.
The hosts continued to look more dangerous after the break with McMahon and ex-Tivvy striker Kezie Ibe causing problems but the Yellows held out.
And they could have snatched a point near the end but Hatch’s shot was saved by the feet of home keeper Stuart Robinson.
Tiverton return to Ladysmead on Saturday when second-placed Brackley are the visitors.
The club are allowing all Under-18s and ex-Tiverton players into the match for free to celebrate manager Martyn Rogers’ 1,000th game in charge, which came last month against Banbury.
All those wishing to gain free entry must get a ticket from the club before the match.
Next Wednesday, Tiverton are away to Swindon Supermarine in the fourth round of the Red Insure League Cup.
