Parkins just misses out on third straight win

TIVERTON Amateur Boxing Club's Sam Parkins was unlucky to miss out on his third straight victory as he lost to James Shekell of Bristol at the city’s Patchway Leisure Centre.

Parkins went down on a tight majority points decision after the three 90-second rounds.

The Tiverton lad was at his boxing best in the first round, throwing combos to the head and body. Shekell came forward in the second, closing Parkins down and bullying him into the corners.

Shekell threw as many punches as he could even though Parkins blocked many.

Generally, Parkins showed superior skills as Shekell pushed forward trying to draw Parkins into a brawl in the final round but the decision, unfortunately, went against him.

This bout was the last but one of the season for Tiverton and coaches Paul and Jesse Harvey and Steve Walters are delighted with how it has gone.

Harvey said: “We have had some great wins. We had young Corey Westbrook just missing out on a Western Counties Schoolboy title, Sam Parkins’ win against Steve Spellman, Reece Burnett’s second round stoppage against Bouremouth’s Casey Bedell.

“And last but not least, Jack Knapton, with the heart of a lion, who never gives up and finished with a great win over Portsmouth’s Robbie Dine. So, all in all, this was a very good season.”

Tiverton ABC are looking for sponsors – anyone is interested should contact Paul on 01884 256282.

Tiverton’s final bout of the season sees Corey Westbrook travel up to Enfield to take on reigning School ABA Champion of England Ellis Delaney.

Coach Paul Harvey said: “It shows how far Corey has come this season when you get the number one boxer in England wanting a bout with you.”
