Somerset County League Premier Division.

Bridgwater Town Reserves 0, Watchet Town 0.

WATCHET defended strongly to come away with an excellent point away at new leaders Bridgwater on Saturday.

Watchet manager Nick Sully said: “We've just been promoted, we've got a young side, we're in the bottom half and we're playing a team who were second in the table and the top scorers, so we weren't going there to be overly adventurous.

“It was a hard-earned point from a battling performance. They were on top but we defended very well.”

Bridgwater started brightly and went close with two efforts from long range, one that was charged down and another that went straight at keeper Adam Bishop, while a goalbound shot was blocked by Lee Nunn amid an almighty scramble in the box.

At the other end Chris Sully had a shot blocked by a defender after the home keeper lost possession on the edge of the area while a superb cross-field ball from Steve Perkins set up Luke Webber, but his lob over the glovesman didn't have enough power and a Bridgwater player got back to head it over the bar.

Both sides were reduced to ten men in the first half when Watchet striker Louis Allen and Bridgwater centre-back Neil Peek were dismissed for tussling on the ground after a tackle, prompting a mass melee as other players joined in.

Bridgwater were in control after the interval but rarely tested Bishop, who blocked one shot with his feet.

After losing their first four away games in the league, Watchet have now secured four points from their last two on their travels.

Manager Sully said: “If you'd have told me two weeks ago we would have taken four points, I would have laughed at you.”

Watchet, who lie in 12th place in the table, entertain second-bottom Cleeve West Town on Saturday.
