ST Augustine's Valiants came from 9-2 down in round one of the new-style Ark Removals Taunton Table Tennis League's Handicap Cup to pinch an exciting 14-11 win over Division One strugglers Saints Sinners.

John Crabtree was at the heart of the comeback securing seven points, this after Bob Kirby and Gustav Lantz had scored bonus point wins over David Adeniji and Jeremy Corke respectively.

The Premier Division pair then lost their double 21-12, 21-10 to Kirby and Richard Harper, but both recovered to put significant points on the board for the Valiants.

With one single to play and only three points adrift, a draw was the best option for the Sinners and when Kirby crushed Crabtree 21-5, a bonus point win was on the cards, but the veteran Crabtree prevailed 21-16 to give his team the victory.

Even closer at the YMCA where first division Rainbows led the Premier leaders Trinity Kings 12-10 with one set to play. Terry Key and Jon Cross had both picked up 3-0 wins to give the Rainbows every chance, but Tony Brown saved the day with a 21-16, 21-13 victory over Ron Cann to earn the Kings a draw.

George Harrow took eight points from his three singles as YMCA Marauders never lost their early lead against Saints Nemo who had Rob Tillotson contributing eight of their 11 points.

Wendy Pryce and Vince Court did the damage for No Saints in their win over YMCA Reds, where only Mark Morley offered any relevant resistance.
