CALVERLEIGH have been joined by Elmore Club and Settler Boys at the top of Division A of the Sampford Peverell and district league after suffering only their second defeat in seven matches.

Meanwhile Lion Cubs have taken a clear lead at the top Division C.

DIVISION A: results – Elmore Club 361, Lumberjacks 348; Bradninch C Club, bye; Globe Appley B 374, Redwoods 395; The Hounds 350, Settler Boys 352; Brass Monkeys 347, Bellies 356; Barmy Army 412, Calverleigh 373; Globetrotters 404, Globe Appley 444; Castaways 372, Queens Head 318.

High Scores: 70 – Colin Prescott (Globe Appley, three spares); Luke Williams (Globe Appley, three spares); 65 – D Gratton (The Hounds).

Reports: Elmore Club saw Lumberjacks overtake them after two legs, albeit only by two, but then pulled 17 pins over the middle two. The legs were shared, but Elmore took more pins and the points to go back to joint top of the league.

Globe Appley B made a good start in their game with Redwoods, winning the first two legs, but that was as good as it got. Redwoods won the rest of the legs to take two good points away with them.

A tight game was fought between The Hounds and Settler Boys, which the Boys just edged to take them joint top. Hounds were eight pins up after four legs, but SBs won the fifth leg by 13 which gave them a two-pin win.

Brass Monkeys’ torrid start to their season continued as they lost to Bellies. They won the first and fifth leg, but could not prevent the Bellies from taking the rest and the points.

Barmy Army’s win over Calverleigh saw the latter lose clear top spot in the league. The Army were always ahead with their opponents playing catch up.

Going into the last two legs Globetrotters were only three pins adrift against Globe Appley, but two legs of 85 from the away team gave the latter a 40-pin victory.

A good start set up Castaways for a win against Queens Head. The home team were 20 pins up after two legs, and that advantage never looked like being challenged.

DIVISION B: results – Barley Mow 422, Bickleigh 387; HCC1 342, All Blacks 333; Crossways 402, The Agri-Nuts 380; The Merriemeade 384, The Beare 384; Ayshford Arms 405, Oggies 366; Uplowman, bye; The Ponies 390, Bradninch RBL 410; Bullocks 417, Roy’s Rebels 389.

High Scores: 68 – Bryan Sharland (Bickleigh, four spares), A Cross (Ayshford Arms, three spares); 66 – Kevin Richardson (Barley Mow, three spares); 65 – Jon Pring (The Agri-Nuts) both three spares.

Reports: Barley Mow got back to winning ways with a comfortable 35 pin win over Bickleigh.

HCC1 started off slowly against the All Blacks but quickly upped their game to ease in front and there they stayed to the final whistle to win by nine.

Crossways built up a good lead against The Agri-Nuts who made a late bid but fell short of their target by 23.

The Merriemeade and The Beare fought hard to share the points as the home team took an early lead but the away team pulled on the last three to earn a share of the spoils.

Ayshford Arms and Oggies were closely matched in the first half but the home side quickly uppped the stakes and won by 39.

The Ponies lost to Bradninch RBL who steadily increased their lead as the game went on and picked up the points by 20 pins.

Bullocks got back to winning ways in style as they gave Roy’s Rebels a 38 pin beating, taking charge from the off.

DIVISION C: Tiverton Chiefs 373, Ashill Inn 358; Huntsham A 383, Heathcoat Hulas 373; Halfway House 357, Booze Cruzers 398; Knock Em Down 307, The Travellers 336; Catherine Wheel 350, HCC2 336; Tiverton RBL 348, Lion Cubs 391; Rose & Crown 428, The Farmers 380.

High Scores: 75 – Liam Bryden (Booze Cruzers, three spares); 70 – Nick Roud (Rose & Crown, three spares).

Reports: Tiverton Chiefs maintained their 100% home record with a 15 pin win against Ashill Inn. Chiefs went three up after two legs, then 13 up after four, leaving Ashill too much to do.

Huntsham A were on first against Heathcoat Hulas and found themselves 12 up after two legs. Hulas stopped the slide and managed to pull back three in the next two, but Huntsham took the fifth leg to seal the win by ten pins.

Booze Cruzers had a useful away win at Halfway House, helped by a 75 from Liam Bryden. Halfway lost all six legs on their way to a rare 41 pin home defeat.

The Travellers were back to winning ways away at Knock Em Down. The damage was done in the fourth leg, where Travellers pulled 13 pins. They eventually won by 29.

Catherine Wheel had a see-saw match in their 14 pin home win against HCC2. The home side were six up after two legs, then 11 down after four. Throwing first, they set HCC2 a challenge with two 60+ legs and that proved too much for the visitors.

Tiverton RBL were on the wrong end of a 43 pin thumping from Lion Cubs, who maintain their 100% away record. Cubs set their stall out early, going 26 up after two and dropping just one leg on their way to the win.

Farmers couldn’t maintain their winning momentum away at Rose & Crown, losing by 48. Rose & Crown were on first and laid down a marker, taking the first two legs by ten. Despite a slight Farmers’ comeback in the fourth leg, the home side were already out of sight.
