TIVERTON golfer Bethany Baker has been called up for county coaching after having her handicap cut from 17 to 11 in less than two months.

The 13-year-old started by shooting a seven-under score in the junior open at Churston, which earned her third prize in the girls’ section and a handicap cut from 17 to 14.

She then finished sixth in the nett competition at the South-West Girls Championship at Ogbourne Downs, Wiltshire, where scores of 76 and 69 reduced her handicap to 11.

The following day she received a letter to say she had been selected for the Devon Golf Partnership’s Under-14 academy programme, which comprises four training sessions at Woodbury Park.

The teenager begins a golf scholarship at King’s School, Taunton, in September.

Marian Stevens posted 39 Stableford points to claim the ladies’ Carolyn Silver Salver on Wednesday. Stevens was followed by Kay Beaumont (38) and Jan Carroll (37) in the Silver Division and had her handicap cut from 17 to 16.

Shirley Ward lifted the Sue Bronze Trophy, also with 39, and earned a handicap reduction from 23 to 22. Bridget Holland (38) and Amanda Moyes (35) were her closest challengers in Bronze Division One.

Julia Cole topped Bronze Division Two with 35, beating Ann Fielding (33) and Carol Clarke (30).

Alison Hilton, Maureen Postles and Lesley Crossley scored 72 Stableford points to win the County Bowmaker qualifying competition. Ros Williams, Jan Carroll and Kay Leach finished second with 70.
