PHIL Moulding lifted his first major singles trophy at Tiverton when winning the men’s Flowers Cup.

Moulding, aided by a birdie on the 13th and five pars on the back nine, carded a five-under nett 66 to earn a handicap cut from 16 to 15.

Now off 14.9, the builder ensured his handicap went back below that of his wife Jane, who was cut to 15.2 after winning the ladies’ July Medal three days earlier.

Alex Gibson came second with 67 and although he birdied the 18th and three other holes, the teenager will regret a quadruple bogey eight on the 17th.

David Colclough finished third on 68, a score matched by Paul Baker, who wasn’t eligible to win a prize as he hadn’t played in three qualifying competitions.

Rhys Cruse posted a gross 68 and Harry Konig a 69 as they completed the top five.

Phil Moulding and his wife Jane followed up their individual victories at Tiverton by teaming up to score 37 Stableford points and secure third prize in the mixed open at Royal Porthcawl, South Wales, on Sunday.

Tiverton finished third in the Palairet Plate at Highbullen on Sunday.

Lee and Bradley Scott top-scored for Tiverton with 37 Stableford points, coming second overall after missing out on a countback.

Lloyd Sampson and Jay Buckingham posted 32 while Cameron Bundy and Alex Gibson carded 29 as Tiverton amassed a total of 98.

The team foursomes event is for clubs who lose in the first and second rounds of the Palairet Trophy.

Stover won the plate with 104 while Great Torrington finished second with 98, pipping Tiverton on a countback.

The ladies suffered another defeat in the Devon League when they went down 4½-1½ away at Churston.

Chris Coombes won 4 and 3 and Julia Cole halved as the hosts triumphed 9-4½ on points.

Tiverton’s boys lost 5½-4½ to the Devon girls team in their annual challenge match on Sunday.

Tiverton member Bethany Baker clinched victory for the girls when she won 2 up against Joe Heard.

Home players Grace Jackson and Mollie Pilling also turned out for the girls.
