BOXING: Fine double for Tiverton ABC
12:49pm Friday 14th February 2014 in Sport
TIVERTON ABC picked up two more victories at Devonport’s open show.
Zack Jones produced a masterclass to win a unanimous points decision over the home club’s highly-rated Brandon Stacey.
And Brad Riggs beat local favourite Ryan Hibberd of Devonport.
The show was held in the marquee suite at Plymouth Albion.
The impressive Jones was involved in a cagey first round in a battle of two southpaws.
Both boxers showed great skills in a nip and tuck affair as they each looked to counter.
Jones started to take charge in the second round and seemed to hurt Stacey with body shots.
Jones started to double phase his work, catching Stacey with long, raking left hands.
Stacey still had his moments but Jones was edging away as he continued to land right hooks to Stacey’s head.
Jones was even more dominant in the third as he continued to land with his right hooks and straight left hands to seal the unanimous verdict.
Coach Paul Harvey said: “That was one of Zack’s best performances to date against a very highly regarded boxer.
“He was faultless and put in a really mature performance showing patience and great boxing skills.”
Brad Riggs won on the top-of-the-bill clash against Hibberd in a really tight contest over three, three minute rounds.
Riggs notched up his fifth win in six bouts this season and took the club’s total of wins this campaign to an impressive 22.
There was very little between the boxers over the whole three rounds. Riggs was more composed as he looked to score with the cleaner shots.
Meanwhile the rugged and durable Hibberd wanted to draw the bout into a war of attrition by trying to make Riggs trade and box off the ropes.
It was an excellent bout featuring two contrasting styles and at the bell Riggs had his hand raised on a split decision.
Harvey said: “This was a tough bout for Brad against an experienced and very fit boxer but he showed again what heart and determination he has.
“Brad’s getting better and better with every bout. He’s a pleasure to train and work with a true asset to the club. I can’t speak highly enough of him.”
