FOOTBALL: Tiverton off the mark at Taunton's expense
4:52pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Sport
TIVERTON Town recorded their first league victory in four attempts this season when they beat Taunton Town 2-1 at Ladysmead on Monday.
In scorching temperatures, Taunton made a dominant start and had the best two chances of the opening quarter. Jonathan Viscosi had to be agile to push out shots from Chris Young, a sweet effort on the turn, and Rodney Marsh, set up by a brilliant run and pass from Craig Herrod.
Tivvy began to come into the game as half-time approached, Steve Reed seeing a free-kick beaten out and Shane Krac firing just over.
As he did in the first, Young had the first chance of the second half, getting behind the home defence to latch on to a long clearance, but pushing his lob just over the bar.
Taunton found themselves favoured numerically when ineffective home striker Jules Emati-Emati received a second yellow card for a crude tackle on Herrod. They responded with a Lewis Tasker free-kick blasted over the bar, and a glancing header from Owen Irish that passed just wide.
Against the run of play, Tiverton took the lead in the 74th minute, subs Josh Concanen and Josh Searle linking up, the latter jinking through the home defence to set up Concanen whose close-range far post effort dribbled over the line via the post and a deflection.
Taunton were back on terms within two minutes, another substitute doing the honours. Immediately after replacing Herrod, Nat Pepperell was given a spot kick opportunity by a hand-ball decision and hammered home emphatically.
Two minutes from time, the subs super-show was complete. Tivvy's number twelve Matt Wright wriggled clear down the right to tee up Concanen for his second of the afternoon, this time a ripper worthy of winning any derby.
