GOLF: Classic wins for Tiverton teams

TIVERTON’S men and ladies both moved through to the third round of the national Mail on Sunday Classic after narrow 3-2 victories.

The men triumphed away at Thurlestone while the ladies edged past Royal North Devon at home.

Ollie Taylor (1 up) and James Lambden (3 and 2) won for the men while Tony Allsopp and Harry Konig halved and Andy Pryce went down 4 and 3.

Left-hander Tim Thompson and youngster Jimmy Heard clinched the men’s Winter Foursomes title after a 2 and 1 victory over Steve Buchanan and Colin Carey in the final on Saturday.

Thompson and Heard knocked out Dave Buxton and Gary Aitchison, Richard Moyes and Nick Konig, Tony Sykes and Mike Cottrell plus Noel Thomas and David Wright on their road to glory.

Brian Phillips, Ricky Baker, Dan Smith and Ollie Main amassed 92 Stableford points to win the four-man team event.

Tony Allsopp, Kelvin Woodgate, Neil Carthew and Mark Arthurs (90) came second ahead of Dave Buxton, Simon Budden, Pete Guest and Richard Colman (85).

Kelvin Short fired 40 points to win the men’s March Midweek Stableford on Monday. The 17-handicapper pipped Roger Fetherston and Terry White by one in Division One.

Andy Hill clinched the Division Two prize with 39, beating Keith Tadman and David Green by one.

The men’s Palairet Trophy team secured a 3½-2½ victory over the veterans’ Emerton-Court Trophy side in their annual challenge match on Sunday.

Ben Hearn and Nixie Acfield beat Ian Brierley and Mike Eastmond 4 and 3, Jim Bray and Alex Trepess defeated Gerry Franklin and Mike Holder 2 and 1 while Andy Bowers and Tom Trowbridge enjoyed a 2 and 1 win over Les Hartley and Peter Stuckey.

A half for club captain Martin Selby and Bob Tye against Colin Taylor and Derrick Barrett secured the overall victory.

The veterans were boosted by wins for Ed Tansey and Mike Hurley, who beat Chris Audin and Tom Hanson, and Bill Tobin and Kelvin Short, who defeated Lloyd Sampson and Carl Skinner.

Maggie Knowlman scored 33 Stableford points over 11 holes to cruise to victory in the ladies’ Goldies competition on Wednesday. The event is for players aged 65 or over – and for each year they exceed that landmark they add an extra stroke to their handicap.

Dori Bracken (24) finished second and was followed in the prizes by Liz Hall (23), Trish Bending (21) and Xanda Vass (20).

In the 18-hole competition off 7/8 handicap, Alison Hilton (33) took the honours in front of Maureen Postles (29) and Jan Carroll (26).
