Olympic-themed fun day coming to Tiverton canal basin
8:32am Wednesday 15th August 2012 in Tiverton
AN Olympic-themed fun day will be held at the canal basin in Tiverton next Thursday (August 23) courtesy of the Grand Western Canal Country Park Ranger Service.
To celebrate how well Team GB has done in the Olympics, Canal Rangers will be encouraging people to take part in their own 'nature themed' Olympic events such as pine cone shot, marathon treasure hunt and pond dipping, as well as lots of arts and crafts. Those who successfully complete all the challenges will get to hold a real Olympic torch and win a medal.
The free day-long event at the Canal Basin in Tiverton is being held in partnership with the Environment Agency who will be offering to teach people how to fish.
The event is covered by an Environment Agency temporary rod licence, so there's no need to purchase a separate licence. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Diane Holland, fisheries technical officer for the Environment Agency said: “Angling is a sport that anyone can do regardless of age or ability and it's great fun. The idea of this event is to introduce children and families to fishing without them having to spend a lot of money on equipment. If they decide they want to take up fishing then they'll know what they need to buy and have the basic knowledge needed to catch fish.”
