A GROUP in Tiverton is hoping to gain more support for community development work in northern Bangladesh.

The Tiverton Sundarban Support Group raised £10,000 in 2011 to fund the basic running costs of 13 pre-schools and health clinics serving 12,000 people, as well as some long-awaited training for teachers and health workers for the village of Sundarban.

Treasurer Michael Tosh said: “Costs are rising fast in Bangladesh, thanks to the recent hikes in global food and oil prices, so we need to increase fundraising just to maintain the same level of support.

“We need to publicise our successes. We are looking at ways to involve Tiverton's doctors and other professionals to widen the link. They could really help to develop crucial health services appropriate to Sundarban's needs.”
