TWO people were arrested after a 62-year-old man collapsed with a suspected heroin overdose in an alleyway off Gold Street, Tiverton on Monday morning, say police.

The man was revived at the scene by paramedics but investigations by police officers led to the arrest of a 25-year-old woman at a house nearby. She was subsequently charged with possession of a Class A drug.

Further enquiries led to a 32-year-old man being arrested for possession at a different address in the town.

Sgt Stuart Bell of Tiverton police said: “Drugs are really something we want to eradicate from the town as best as we can.

“Addictive drugs may not often affect people directly but most burglaries and car thefts are a result of people trying to fund their habit.

“We may not win the war but thankfully we are certainly winning a few battles.”

Sgt Bell added that there had been a slight increase in thefts from cars recently and warned motorists not to leave valuables such as SatNavs on show.

· In the run up to Christmas the Tiverton Neighbourhood Policing Team are increasing the number of visits to licensed premises by uniformed officers.

In the last week there have been over 100 visits to different licensed premises in and around Tiverton.

Sgt Bell added: “In recent years police officers have been a regular sight in pubs, clubs and off licences and the purpose of this recent drive is two-fold: to offer reassurance to the increased number of law abiding night time revellers at this time of the year and highlight the Domestic Violence Abuse Week which started on Monday.”
