A NEW war memorial planned for Tiverton has changed its proposed location after a public consultation unearthed local concerns.

Previously set for Angel Hill, this location was said to be unsuitable because of traffic noise and fumes, the exposed nature of the area, and the generally non-central location.

The council now plan to build the memorial between Raymond Penny House and Elsie May's cafe on Phoenix Lane. This area, within a 'pocket park', will offer greater opportunities for green space around the memorial. The council hope this area will be attractive, reflective and frequently used by everyone.

Councillor Richard Chesterton, Cabinet Member for Planning & Regeneration, said: “The public responded with some very valid points which we have taken on board and responded to.

"The Council’s consultations are genuinely held so that we can listen to the reactions and suggestions of those who reply.

"The small garden on Phoenix Lane is clearly valued and whilst it will eventually be developed, we can provide a replacement garden, a new location for the Burma Star memorial stone and a brand new war memorial that is a fitting reminder of the sacrifice that so many people made for their country”.

The new location for the memorial has added benefits as the green space will compliment and improve the setting of the historic listed buildings around the area. It will also add a more appealing pedestrian link to the multi-story car park, the council offices, and the surrounding businesses.

Initial work carried out at the Angel Hill site has identified repairs and restoration works to the listed lamppost and the raised footpath, which could be used for a later project.
