OLYMPIAN and Tiverton Swimming Club member Sue Haigh has launched a search for past members to help celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.

A centenary party will be held at the Old Heathcote School Community Centre in Tiverton in July, and Sue is eager to unite as many past and present members as possible to celebrate the milestone.

The European, Commonwealth and Olympic Games veteran is also keen to get hold of any old photos and memorabilia relating to the club, which today boasts more than 185 members.

Sue, who last year claimed gold in the 400m freestyle event at the Masters World Championships in Italy, joined the club in the mid-1980s after moving to Tiverton with her young children, and has continued to train there ever since.

The club provides the only opportunity for competitive swimming in Tiverton, and members of all ages regularly compete at county, regional and national level.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity for old friends to catch up, and see how the club has grown and continues to inspire children and adults over the years,” said Sue, who reached the final with the British 4x100m freestyle team at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

“We’d like to have a memory wall containing any old medals, photos, programmes or anything connected with the club to evoke memories, and urge anyone with such memorabilia to get in touch.”

The centenary party starts at 4pm on Saturday, July 27, and will have a climbing wall, bouncy castle, bar and hog roast. It ends at 10pm.
