Mock elections at Tiverton High School

TIVERTON High School staged a mock election to encourage students to take an interest and raise the importance of voting.

District councillors visited the school and made their mock case for election, and students then had the opportunity to vote based on the speeches given.

Emily Pike, subject leader, said: “Students felt the experience to make good decisions based on the speeches given, and they voted with maturity and conviction, which will give them a greater understanding of their democratic rights and responsibilities in the future.”

Cllr Des Hannon said: “I didn’t have to pretend for this mock election. I really believe 16-year-olds should get the vote.

“How can we expect young adults to play a responsible part in society if we don’t trust them to take part in democratic decisions.”
