THE appetizing aroma of cooking sausages and vegetarian kebabs marked a coming together of the generations at a recent BBQ in Cullompton .
Members of the Culm Valley Senior Voice (CVSV), the voluntary forum for the over-50s, held the barbecue to mark the occasion of Cllr John Berry presenting Devon Youth Service cookery awards to 11 young people at the John Tallack Centre.
The award recipients had completed ten hours of practical cookery under the supervision of youth workers before rounding off their training by cooking and serving a three-course meal to members of CVSV, who regularly use the centre for their Regain Your Youth sessions.
CVSV members returned the favour by holding the BBQ at the awards ceremony. Cllr Berry, Devon County Council ward member for Cullompton Rural, said: “I’d like to thank the organizers for the evening and the perfect weather . I think it is really important that during their school life children learn the basic forms of cookery that can be used every day, and that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
“I would like to congratulate these young people on their cooking, and also extend my congratulations to all the young people who use the John Tallack Centre as well as the supervisors.”
CVSV chairman Ann McClements added: “As a group we encourage intergenerational activities, and we wanted to thank the young people for their earlier hospitality. “This evening was a brilliant occasion enjoyed by all, and I’d also like to thank my helpers Trish Callard and Pam Partridge, and Barry Thrusell and Harold McClements on the barbecue.”
