Farmer sees charity at work in Egypt

A CULLOMPTON farmer who is a long-term supporter of a horse and donkey charity has just been on a ten-day tour of Egypt to see the work of the charity first hand.

Elizabeth Bartley, 65, travelled the length of the country from Aswan to Cairo and attended a special reception at the British Embassy.

The once in a lifetime trip was organised by The Brooke to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

The Brooke, the UK’s leading charity for horses and donkeys working overseas, took around 30 of its dedicated supporters to Egypt to see just how far it has come since founder, Dorothy Brooke, opened the original hospital in Cairo in 1934.

Elizabeth has supported the Brooke for 30 years but this was the first time she had seen the charity’s work first hand.

She visited five of the locations that the Brooke works in, including Luxor, Edfu, Aswan, Alexandria and Cairo.

There was also a little time to take in some of the magnificent sights such as the Temple of Luxor, Pyramids and the River Nile.

Elizabeth said: “Seeing the vets in practice was a great experience and the work they do helping horses and donkeys in pain is second-to-none.

“I was particularly impressed by the way they work together with communities to help teach local people about the importance of animal welfare.

“This had made such a difference to the lives of so many working animals, as owners are taking the Brooke’s message onboard and are seeking help from the Brooke vets far quicker if their horse or donkey becomes ill or is injured.”

Brooke’s network of mobile vet teams, field clinics and community animal health practitioners, work across ten countries in the developing world and provide care and treatment in conjunction with education and training to promote good animal welfare practices.
