Tiverton pupils get inside track on credit crunch

TWO students from Tiverton High School were thrilled to be invited to Exeter College to meet one of the heads of the Bank of England.

Ami Wyllie, an ambassador for the school, and Jack Wakefield, new Head Boy, were accompanied by head teacher Andrew Lovett to attend a talk by one of the college’s most notable alumni, Spencer Dale.

Mr Dale attended Exeter College before going on to graduate from university with an MSc in Economics. He joined the Bank of England in 1989 and, after various roles during a 20 year career, became executive director and chief economist.

As a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, Mr Dale undertakes regular visits around the UK to talk to firms about business conditions and explain the MPC's projections for inflation and economic growth.

"The opportunity to meet, listen to and question such a powerful and influential man was great and really inspiring,” said Jack.

"He went into a lot of detail about the Credit Crunch - about how it was caused and what he predicts will happen in the future.”

Ami added: "Everyone seems to have really enjoyed and learnt from the talk; it was fascinating."
