Tiverton stores catching on to Fairtrade

TIVERTON has been awarded Fairtrade Town Status for the next two years.

Originally achieving Fairtrade Status in March 2008, the local Fairtrade Support Group had to prove to the Fairtrade Foundation that the support, use and sale of Fairtrade goods in the town and surrounding area had increased over the last twelve months.

Alison Rice, Chair of the group, said: “Several new, small businesses in town are offering a range of Fairtrade foods this year and both small shop keepers and supermarkets have expanded their selection of Fairtrade goods.

“It’s possible to get anything from Fairtrade wine to a Fairtrade tee-shirt in town.”

A Tiverton Fairtrade Directory was published this summer. It lists the names and addresses of restaurants, shops, hotels and farmhouse bed and breakfasts that use or sell Fairtrade goods, as well as schools, colleges, community groups and churches that support the movement.

Alison Rice added: “The directory is available at the information bureau and in shops and cafes in town so do go and pick up a copy to help you with your Fairtrade shopping.”

Tiverton Town Council endorsed the Fairtrade Town Status application by strengthening their commitment to use Fairtrade products at their meetings when possible.

“But,” said Alison, “they quite rightly want to support local producers as well and it is entirely possible to do both – farming and trade should be a fair deal for everyone involved.”
