WITH the help of the local cadets, the new garden at Court House care home residential home was officially opened by radio presenter Janet Kipling on Saturday, June 25 at the residents and family members’ summer barbecue party.

The design was inspired by the cadets and includes a patio and barbecue area, a central elevated flower bed and a solar-powered water feature.

Holly Higgs, a senior care assistant at Court House and detachment commander of Cullompton Cadets, said: “They were really excited to be involved in the planning and development of the garden and it’s been part of their Duke of Edinburgh and Cadet in the Community Award.”

The owners and the manager of the care home wanted to create a better outdoor space for the residents that could be used for activities as well as for leisure.

Helga Penhale, the manager of Court House, said: “Previously it wasn’t used and wasn’t a safe area.

“Access to the outdoors is known to improve physical and mental wellbeing and this now means residents can come outside whenever they wish to and enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the garden.

“The garden can also assist with memories and practical tasks can give residents a real sense of purpose.”

Court House considers its new garden to be a small oasis where people can enjoy time with their loved ones while surrounded by beautiful plants and garden features.

Some 29 residents are registered at Court House, it includes a residential home for the elderly with a specialism in dementia as well as the new home for people with learning disabilities.
