THE VILLAGE of Hemyock lit up on Saturday, as the local community turned out for a spectacular Lights Parade.

A lantern procession, led by a samba band, wound its way through the village, switching on lights strung through the trees as they went.

In an unusual twist on traditional Christmas lights, giant pictures of local residents were projected onto buildings. The parade ended with the lighting of a new Christmas star, specially designed for the occasion, on top of the church tower in the village centre.

Parade organiser Tim Martin said: "This is the first time Hemyock has had Christmas lights, and the response has been amazing. The whole village has joined in with lantern-making, music-making and practical support. We're really grateful for the help we have had from the Parish Council, Big Lottery Fund and local businesses"
