A STUDENT at Queen Elizabeth’s, Crediton has been awarded a prestigious scholarship at one of the oldest schools in the world.

James Mitchell has been awarded the organ scholarship at Ely Cathedral - and a place at King's Ely.

James will be playing the organ for services, accompanying and conducting both the cathedral and school choirs in the 11th century cathedral.

James will be the most recent in a line of celebrated Ely Organists that stretches back to 1685.

Working closely with the cathedral organists and directors of music, James will have a key role in all the musical activities of the Kings Ely School, including playing with the school orchestra on piano and cello.

James’s music teacher, Lucy Welsman said: “James has been a huge asset to the music department during his time at QE.

“He is a talented pianist, cellist, singer, trombone player and composer, to name but a few of his outstanding abilities.

“He has been a valued member of numerous co-curricular activities including the QE choir, 'Les Miserables', the Jazz Band and is also a very active member of the local arts scene. “Gaining this scholarship is a well-deserved tribute to James and we wish him every success in his future studies.”
