WORK to clean-up a derelict property on Cullompton high street has finally been completed - 14 months after it collapsed.

A section of cob wall weighing about a tonne from Harlequin Valet laundrette collapsed on to the pavement in January – and Mid Devon District Council (MDDC) said: “Works to make good the exposed elevations of buildings on either side of the site and install a single storey site frontage will commence the week of April 20.

“The first step will involve the erection of scaffolding from which the work will take place. Having assessed the extent of the work now revealed following demolition, we anticipate that further works will take approximately five weeks.”

Contractors acting on behalf of Mid Devon District Council started the demolition of the Harlequin Valet dry cleaning site in High Street, Cullompton at the beginning of March.

William Nicholas James, of Galmington Road, Taunton, was found guilty at Exeter Magistrates’ Court of continued non-compliance of a Section 215 Notice referring to untidy land.

James was fined £3,000 with a £120 surcharge and told to pay £648 prosecution costs to Mid Devon District Council.
