A SPECIAL Constabulary Inspector from Crediton is to retire after 22 years of service.

Bob Webb of Devon & Cornwall Police took up the position in 1992 after being made redundant from his day job and has served the people of Crediton ever since.

His role is voluntary and he has carried it out alongside running his own refrigerator trailer hire company.

Bob said: “It’s been enjoyable and I’ve seen a lot of changes in my time. The enjoyment comes from doing so much work for your community, because you’re doing it for your own people.

“I was made redundant almost 23 years ago now and decided to get into the police after coming home to find a car embedded in the front of my house – two special constables were on the scene and asked if I’d ever considered doing some work in my community.

“I decided to give it a go and 22 years later, here I am.”

David McFadden of Crediton Police paid tribute to Bob’s work. He said: “Bob is a well known pillar of our community here in Mid Devon. During his time in the police, Bob worked his way up through the ranks to Special Inspector level and has received various commendations.

“For the last couple of years due to his vast knowledge of all things ‘rural’ he was appointed as the first rural engagement officer in our force.

“His role was to assist us with combating and educating our rural communities on acquisitive crime types and how our communities could help themselves to try and stop them becoming victims of crime.

“He has been very successful in carrying out this role and will be sadly missed by all when he goes.”

Bob’s official retirement date is July 5, when he will be having a small party with friends and colleagues.
