Waitrose fire case: man, 24, in court
6:00pm Saturday 26th October 2013 in Mid Devon News
A MAN accused of setting fire to the Waitrose supermarket in Wellington, causing an estimated £1million damage, has appeared in court.
Robert Pitman, 24, of High Street, Wellington, appeared at Taunton Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing last Thursday.
He denied causing the fire on Sunday, July 21, and was remanded in custody.
He had already previously denied arson at magistrates’ court.
Flames engulfed the store in the early hours, forcing it to close for just over three weeks, with staff relocated to other branches, including Exeter, Crewkerne and Weston.
It was re-opened in mid-August by the firefighters who helped save it and branch manager Chris Reynard handed over a cheque for £5,000 to the Firefighters Charity during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The trial is expected to take place in January, 2014.
