Parking charges set to increase by 10p in Tiverton and Crediton

PARKING charges will rise by 10p in Tiverton and Crediton next month despite thousands of people signing a petition to halt the increases.

The changes, set to take effect from April 1, were approved by Mid Devon District Council last June and will see a five-hour stay in Tiverton’s multi-storey car park climb from £1 to £1.10.

In Crediton, the increases apply to the long stay car parks in St Saviours Way, Station Road and Wellbrook, all of which are set to rake in an additional income of almost £4,500 for the authority in fees, season tickets, residential and business permits.

Around the same time as the council approved the increases, more than £2,600 people added their names to a failed petition circulated by Westexe hairdresser Maria Cheatle to stop the changes.

Crediton district, town and county councillor Nick Way has submitted several points to the council, arguing that the increases will lead to added congestion as more motorists seek to find alternative parking on residential streets.

A spokesman for the district council confirmed it had received Cllr Way’s comments and would respond to them specifically at the next full council meeting on April 24.
