THE Lazy Toad at Brampford Speke was among the main winners at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards.

The pub and bistro walked away with silver in the Tourism Pub of the Year category.

The multi-award winning Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life bagged a bronze in the award’s Small Visitor Attraction of the Year category.

Devon’s tourism businesses picked up two gold medals and 15 silvers at the event at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The Lazy Toad won two Taste of the West dining awards and a silver in the Devon Tourism Awards.

Husband and wife Clive and Mo Walker took over the pub in 2007 and since then have secured top billings in the Michelin and Good Pub guides.

Following a ten-month refurbishment, the inn now offers accommodation and Clive and Mo grow a lot of their own produce on site and graze lambs for inclusion on the menu.

Clive said: “What, with all the competition there is out there, we are more than pleased. It has taken us six years to get to this position and we have a very small team here that work extremely hard to provide top quality food and service to our customers.

“Our customers mean everything to us and it is absolutely vital that they go away from here having had a wonderful dining experience, which thankfully most of them seem to be doing.”

Both businesses will now go through to the national Enjoy England Awards for Excellence in May.
