GAS main replacement works in Tiverton's Gold Street are expected to cause disruption in the town centre for up to 13 weeks.

The junction with Chapel Street is currently closed and will be off limits for up to a month while Wales and West Utilities carry out the first stage of the scheme.

Following this, the main stretch of Gold Street from Barrington Street to Bampton Street will be shut for up to five weeks before the final section of the works will involve the closure of the junction with Fore Street and Bampton Street for a further four weeks.

The scheme forms part of Wales & West Utilities' multi-million pound, 30-year replacement programme across the region and will involve the replacement of aging pipes with non-corrosive, modern alternatives, which are expected to last for up to 80 years.

A spokesman for Wales and West Utilities said: “We are working on a gas mains replacement scheme in Gold Street, which will help ensure the safe and secure supply of gas to homes and businesses in the area for years to come.

“During each stage deliveries to properties will be accommodated.

“Our aim is always to minimise disruption and complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.

“We have kept traders informed and regret any inconvenience that this vitally important scheme has caused.”
