Pay out to ease move for elderly
ELDERLY people who are set to be moved from their council flats in Tiverton are to be given £7,000 in compensation, it em-erged this week.
Residents of the council flats and three bungalows in Broad Lane and Wingfield Close could be given the money, even though the overall scheme has not yet been approved.
Mid Devon District Council wants to re-place the homes with a three-storey block of flats nearby, where there would be a communal restaurant, a laundry and other facilities.
Some of the residents have previously told the council they oppose the move.
The council also proposes demolishing nearby Charlton Lodge residential home and rebuilding it on the site of the existing flats.
The development has not yet received planning permission and there are fears that it could be scuppered by flooding issues.
The project is part of a link-up between Devon County Council and Shaw Health-Care, who are carrying out similar schemes countywide.
Cathrine Simmons, housing development officer at Mid Devon District Council, said this week: "The idea is to provide some extra care flats.
"The current ones are past their sell-by date and people don't like bedsits.
"We've talked to tenants, and have discussed their requirements and disturbance payments.
"Most people are willing to go with it, though some were hesitant or worried."
Mrs Simmons stressed that planning permission has not yet been granted, but if councillors give the go-ahead building work would start in 2011.
In the interim, the homes will be let as temporary accommodation once the current tenants move out.
She said: "That way we'll avoid having to board them up and causing an eyesore.
"If we don't get planning permission we would still have to refurbish the buildings anyway."
The scheme is being discussed by Mid De-von District Council next Thursday.
