Police target under-age drinkers

A 'UNIQUE' police operation targeting under-age drinkers in Mid Devon is being stepped up as the warmer weather attracts more youngsters onto the streets.

So far this year around 120 young drinkers have already been caught - and police expect that number to rise in the coming months.

The Streetsafe scheme has been running for two years and has been instrumental in reducing under age drinking and anti-social behaviour on the streets.

This week, co-ordinator and police licensing officer Mike Sais, said: "In addition to our regular police work we also have a monthly blitz and these have proved very successful.

"It's not just about wielding a big stick. We always tell the parents by letter what their child has been up to and back it up with a leaflet underlining the health issues and encouraging parents to talk to their children.

"It's very rare you see the same child twice."

He added: "As far as I am aware our scheme is unique. It is down to manpower and what forces want to tackle. We have decided this should be tackled as a priority."

Streetsafe works in conjunction with Pubwatch and Doorwatch.

The Pubwatch represents all licensed premises including supermarkets, cornershops and members clubs.

A "Ban From One, Ban From All" policy was adopted and this means that should any person be involved in crime and disorder on Licensed Premises that they would be banned from all members premises. At present there are 120 members and these are in the three town centres and surrounding areas.
