New Cullompton library 'will boost economy'

A MAJOR £3 million investment in Cullompton’s economy has been approved by Devon County Council.

The council’s has approved plans for a new library in the town which will include an ICT hub, a centre for adult and community learning and meeting rooms.

Subject to planning permission, the new library and community hub will be built on the site of the former health centre which the county plans to buy from the Primary Care Trust.

The library will be four times the size of the current facility.

Work could start on the site in January 2010 with the opening of the new library scheduled for March 2011.

Devon County Council leader John Hart said: “ “Not only will it provide a raft of vital community facilities but the injection of £3 million into Cullompton will provide a real boost to its economic vitality.”

Cabinet member for Adult and Community Services and Libraries, Stuart Barker, said: “I am determined this new development will be a flagship centre offering 21st century information, learning and technological facilities to the people of Cullompton.

“It will be a real centre for all the community where they can access all sorts of information from a wide variety of sources – not just books, CDs and DVDs.

“Our vision is for the new building to become a focus for all the public services in Cullompton which is why we are working so closely with the district and town councils.

“Cullompton also needs better broadband connectivity and accessibility and this project will provide state of the art facilities for local businesses.

“This can only boost the local economy by providing facilities such as audio and video conferencing on a local, national and international level.”
