Support grows for Crediton museum

THE wheels are in motion for a museum and heritage centre in Crediton.

Since the Crediton Area History and Museum Society announced its plans in April it has received plenty of support.

The society obtained permission to occupy the ground floor of the Old Town Hall, rent free, during the month-long Crediton Festival to test the water.

Archivist John Jones said: “Support for this project is growing within the town and surrounding area.

“The organising committee has been greatly encouraged by the amount of interest shown.

“Offers of ongoing financial help have been received from a number of people.”

The exhibition, Crediton Through The Ages, has been well supported with hundreds of people visiting and leaving voluntary donations.

It has been such a success that it will remain until after the end of the Crediton Festival while the society continues its efforts to raise enough money to take a lease and open the museum permanently.

Despite growing support, further finance is still needed and organisers are preparing applications for grants from funding organisations including the National Lottery.

Mr Jones added: “While there is a great deal of local support for this project to succeed, we will need further help, mainly in the area of revenue funding which is not covered by grant providers such as Heritage Lottery.

“Applications for membership of the society and offers of help are welcomed.”
