Plymouth garden waste collection scheme success

Plymouth’s garden waste collection scheme has seen a 13 per cent increase in the amount collected this year.

Since April the teams have collected over 3,920 tonnes and gardeners across the city are being urged to get their gardens in order as the scheme draws to the end of the season.

Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Brian Vincent said: “We would like to thank those who have taken part in the scheme. We are averaging 13 per cent more than last year and this has been despite the wettest summer in 100 years.”

Earlier this year, bags were distributed to a further 20,000 homes in pockets of the city which have not previously had the service including parts of St Budeaux, Honicknowle, Ham, Eggbuckland, St Peter and the Waterfront, Efford, part of Peverell, Drake, Stoke, Keyham, Devonport and Stonehouse. Bags were also delivered to new housing developments.

The scheme will draw to a close at the end of October as scheduled. The collection operates every fortnight – the same week that people’s recycling is collected.

Residents can take their garden waste to Chelson Meadow and Weston Mill household recycling centres.
