ACTIVISTS descended on Exeter's RD and E Hospital in protest against a decision by Devon NHS chiefs to join a pay coalition.

UNISON Devon Health Branch demonstrated outside the hospital today supported by colleagues from RCN and Unite.

UNISON activists then took to the streets of Exeter to get the views and  support of the general public.

Nearly 700 members of the public signed a petition calling for the 20 affected Trusts to pull out of the pay coalition.

Steve Wright, RD and E UNISON Branch Secretary, said: “The public are behind us and were shocked by what they heard. It is brilliant that so many people knew about our lobby and were outraged by the actions of the Trust."

A public meeting will be held this evening at Exeter Central Library from 7pm to discuss the issue. Doors open at 6.30pm.
