Exeter and the rest of the South-West must get better rail provision if it is to cope with the growth being planned over the coming years, says the city council.

The council is asking the public to support its call for improvements to Exeter's rail system.

Members of the council's Scrutiny Economy Committee will next week back Devon County Council's 'Devon Metro' proposals, which feature new stations at Newcourt, Marsh Barton and Hill Barton, coupled with better frequencies on key commuter routes.

Committee chair Cllr Stella Brock said: "Exeter has the makings of an excellent rail network, with five lines and eight stations.

"By adding stations to serve the city's key development areas, we could reduce the numbers of people taking to the roads."

Cllr Rachel Sutton, Lead Councillor for Sustainable Development and Transport, said: "Recognising rail's potential now means that we can include the stations in planning for future development, and ensure that we receive funds from developers through planning agreements and the new Community Infrastructure Levy."

Cllr James Taghdissian said better trains were needed to cope with today's demand, let alone cater for additional growth.

He said: "Passenger numbers are increasing by more than 10% a year on local lines but Exeter looks set to make do with hand-me-down trains for the foreseeable future."

Cllr Brock added: "We need to get the South-West on to the Transport Minister’s radar, and the only way that we are going to do that is by mobilising enough people to get across this message.

“If we sit back and wait for better rail provision it won't happen.

“The rail network in the South-West is still stuck in a different era and we need for it to be taken into the 21st century.

“It's now down to the public, local businesses and the media to join us in pressing the Government for a better deal for Exeter and the wider South-West.”
