New cases of Swine Flu at the University of Exeter

FIVE more students have tested positive for Swine Fle at the University of Exeter.

There are now 15 students mildly affected by the virus and receiving the appropriate medical care. They are expected to make a full recovery after treatment.

Health chiefs have reiterated the message that people with flu-like symptoms should phone their GP or NHS Direct for advice before visiting a doctor’s surgery or other NHS premises.

Close contacts of the students will receive antiviral drugs as a precaution and anyone reporting flu-like symptoms will be offered tests for swine flu.

Following a risk assessment carried out by the Health Protection Agency and Devon Primary Care Trust, the University has been advised that no other actions are necessary and the institution can remain open.

The University is working closely with the Health Protection Agency and NHS colleagues to monitor the situation. Devon PCT and the HPA have established plans in place to deal with cases of swine flu, and the University has a Flu Pandemic Contingency Plan.

Staff and students are being reminded to be vigilant and should they develop flu-like symptoms, the advice of the Health Protection Agency is to contact their GP by telephone or NHS Direct on 0845 4647. Students are being asked not to visit GP surgeries or hospital if they do have flu-like symptoms. Each case will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided.

Good basic hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including swine flu. This includes:

CATCH IT - Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.

BIN IT - Germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of your tissue as soon as possible. KILL IT - Hands transfer germs to everything you touch. Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully. Wash you hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of germs. Clean hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product. For more information on swine flu call the national information line on 0800-1513513.
