A PUBLIC exhibition of the masterplan proposals for the Seven Brethren Industrial estate in Barnstaple, is being held from March 12 to 14.

The masterplan outlines the vision for development of the site over the next 20 years, including the proposed new college and an ‘energy from waste’ plant that could provide heat and power across the estate.

Cllr Brian Greenslade, Leader of Devon County Council, said: “Seven Brethren has a crucial role to play in growing our economy, so we need to ensure that any development is sustainable, with the best interests of the community in mind.

“This is especially critical at this time in terms of both economic regeneration and also in reducing our carbon footprint.

“It will give residents chance to ask questions about the energy from waste plant, to learn about the strict environmental safeguards that would be employed and the contribution this plant can make to our campaign to make Devon the greenest county.

"The masterplan will help us plan for the future so that we can gain the best for the area. We are looking at many different aspects and we are keen to hear people’s comments and points of view.

“I would encourage everyone to come along and find out more about this exciting new opportunity for our community.”

Cllr Mike Harrison, Leader of North Devon Council, said: “There are great prospects for the site. The proposed new college will provide a real focal point, as well as providing outstanding educational facilities.

“Using energy from waste to heat nearby buildings shows we are committed to innovation as well as sustainability. It will cut our carbon footprint and gain valuable energy from waste that can’t be recycled.

"I am delighted that both Devon County Council and North Devon Council are working together on this project.

“This site is one of Barnstaple’s greatest assets, so I look forward to hearing people’s thoughts on the plans.”

The masterplan looks at all the factors that would need to be considered in developing the site, including the environment, transport and road requirements, future economic growth, community and social needs and sustainability.

The exhibition will be on March 12, from 10am to 8pm at North Devon Leisure Centre, and March 13 and 14 from 9.30am to 5pm at Greenlanes Shopping Centre More information is available on www.devon.gov.uk/index/environment.htm
