POLICE evacuated shops and closed off the High Street in Exeter today after an unattended suitcase was spotted in a doorway near Barclays Bank in the city centre.
Police examined the contents of the case and found nothing dangerous.
The owner of the case went back to retrieve it once the cordons were released.
A police spokesman said: “Police would like to reiterate to everyone the importance of not leaving bags or other items unattended in public places.
“This is an example of the disruption that it can cause.
“We endorse the actions of the person who called us for his vigilance in this matter and would encourage anyone else whose suspicions are aroused in similar circumstances to do the same.”
