FLEET Commander Vice Admiral Sir Philip Jones KCB has presented his Commendations to Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and civilian staff for their outstanding efforts over the past year.

Receiving a Commendation was Warrant Officer 1 Engineering Technician (Weapons Engineer Submarines) Nicholas Ullett from Plymouth.

WO Ullett was awarded a Commendation in recognition of his outstanding efforts supporting the Weapons Engineering Department in HMS Tireless.

His meticulous planning allowed him the opportunity to coordinate and execute complex projects at different levels to ensure the submarine remained at a constant state of readiness.

WO1 Ullett said: “It’s a great honour to receive this award, recognising the effort of, not only myself, but everyone who worked so hard on Tireless to complete her demanding work packages, and on operations.

“It was a very enjoyable, yet challenging, deployment.”

Nicholas, who grew up in Southampton but who has called Plymouth home for years, joined the Royal Navy in 1991.

The 43-year-old has two children and set to marry his partner, Janice, later in the summer.

He added: “My last deployment with Tireless – the one that I received this commendation for – was by far my favourite deployment in the Royal Navy. It was a truly multi faceted deployment from supporting ongoing operations as well as helping in the search for the missing Malaysian Airliner.

“All of this took place on a submarine that was extended in service to complete this deployment.”

Presenting the awards Vice Admiral Jones said: “Our people are a vital component of what makes the Royal Navy so effective as it represents the interests of the United Kingdom around the globe.

"These awards are recognition of those men and women who have really gone above and beyond in what they do.

“In recognising them, I am also recognising their family and friends who provide such incredible and resolute support.

"Indeed it is fantastic that so many recipients and their loved ones are able to join me today to celebrate their achievements.”

Commendations were awarded at a ceremony at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth.
