THE Devon Winter Ability Games will take place on Friday, January 30, at The Life Centre in Plymouth.

This event will provide the opportunity for disabled young people from schools throughout Devon to participate in competitions spanning across four different sports which are; Boccia, Indoor Rowing, Tennis and Table Cricket alongside seven taster activities.

The event is part of the Sainsbury’s School Games and over 400 participants are set to take part in a variety of different competitions and taster sports.

The young people from local schools and colleges will also be crucial in organising the event on the day as over 70 of them will be recruited as ‘Games Maker’ style volunteers.

Active Devon Chief Executive Matt Evans said: “The Devon Winter Ability Games is firmly established as one of the highlights in the annual calendar for school sport in Devon.

"It is a fantastic day which is hugely inspirational. Not only does it help young people who often experience real challenges to get into sport but it is largely delivered with the help and support of young people as leaders, officials and event deliverers.

"Active Devon is really proud to be part of the Local Organising Committee which helps the Devon Winter Ability Games to take place”

In addition to the competitions and activities on offer, Commonwealth Games Medallist Katherine Endacott will be present at the event as the Games’ Sporting Champion. Katherine will open the event and spend the day meeting and interacting with participants who will get the opportunity to ask for her autograph.

Participants’ will also have the opportunity to take part in taster activities delivered by local community clubs. Taster activities include; Golf, Archery, Badminton, Swimming, Wheelchair Dance, Bowls and Sitting Volleyball.

The cultural activity of mosaic making will be available to all. The mosaic will be based around the six Spirit of the Games values which all School Games events encompass.

The Devon Winter Ability Games is part of a programme of four Countywide Sainsbury’s School Games multi-sport festivals in Devon, delivered by Active Devon on behalf of the Devon School Games Local Organising Committee.
