HMS Sutherland has been fitted with a brand new cutting-edge radar.

The Plymouth-based Type 23 frigate, known as the Fighting Clan, installed her new 997 Radar as part of her ongoing refit in Devonport Naval Base.

The radar uses state-of-the-art technology to enable HMS Sutherland to see over the horizon to a greater detail than ever before.

Petty Officer Engineering Technician James Chisholm, 31, from Bristol said: “It was great to see HMS Sutherland finally receive her 997 Radar antenna. I am really looking forward to flashing it up for the first time and having my chance to maintain and gain experience on the Navy’s newest radar.’’ The radar is a next generation 3-D surveillance system which can operate effectively worldwide and provide air-traffic management as well as air-defence and anti-ship roles.

The captain of HMS Sutherland, Commander Stephen Anderson, from Kilmarnock, Scotland said: “I am very pleased to see the latest state of the 997 Radar fitted onboard HMS Sutherland, which is the culmination of hard work from a variety of different organisations.

“BAe Systems and Babcock have worked together as an alliance to ensure our fit is successful, ably assisted by Defence Equipment and Support and of course my team onboard.

"I look forward to putting our new radar, which is cutting edge technology, through its paces during trials early next year.”

HMS Sutherland is continuing with her refit alongside in Devonport and looks to proceed to sea next year for trials before returning to the fleet.

The Fighting Clan, has the motto ‘Sans Peur’ (which is translated ‘Without Fear’), and she is well on her way to once again becoming Scotland’s Fearless Frigate.
