DURING the poignant events over the weekend, crew from HMS Sutherland embraced the opportunity to visit their namesake county and attend their Remembrance parade.
While their ship is being refitted in Devonport dockyard in Plymouth, sailors from the Plymouth-based ship joined the town of Brora in Sutherland in remembering the fallen.
Lieutenant Nicholas Ward, Warrant Officer 1 Timothy Cox and Engineering Technician Bruce Allan all took great pride in attending the Remembrance parade on Sunday at the Brora war memorial. They were welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Sutherland, Monica Main.
The town also invited them to watch the local football team, Brora Rangers, who thrashed their opponents Rothes FC 6-0.
The crew were delighted when they were also offered a private tour of the historic Dunrobin Castle which they all found “truly excellent and informative”.
Lt Nicholas Ward said: "It has been a great privilege to be able to attend Remembrance Sunday in our affiliated county. The people of Sutherland have been amazingly generous in their hospitality towards us and we are looking forward to returning with the ship, early next year to strengthen our ties in the area."
