Awards recognise young talent in science, technology, engineering and maths

The prestigious prize is designed to recognise and reward young Devon-based talent in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

All the projects eligible for the Enterprising Young Devon Award from 11-18 year olds across the area are on display at the event and will be judged by a panel of industry experts who will be on the lookout for projects that show innovation and marketability.

Four winners will be announced and each winner will receive dedicated business development support.

They will also get the chance of going through to the national final in Birmingham, which is what happened to one of last year’s winners, Will Rinvolucri from Braunton School.

Will designed an innovative surf board trailer which allows surfers without a car to tow their boards to the beach behind a bike.

Each Enterprising Young Devon Award winner also secures a STEM enterprise day for their school from the Education Business Partnership South West.

An enterprise day brings together STEM ambassadors and other representatives from the business community to deliver varied challenges during an activity day that encourages innovation creativity and risk taking.

Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for Economy and Growth, said: “The Enterprising Young Devon Award is about bringing STEM subjects alive for young people in Devon and being a source of inspiration and excitement to help drive entrepreneurship.

"I believe it’s really important to encourage interest in these subjects and ensure young people are aware of the varied and rewarding careers available to them in these areas.

"We are really pleased to be continuing to support a competition that recognises the enterprising spirit of Devon’s schools and young people. We’ve seen some really impressive ideas and concepts come through this competition in previous years and we’re sure that this year will be no exception.”
