Thirty people were evacuated from their homes in Dawlish last night as high tides and crashing waves threatened flooding.
Devon and Cornwall Police, in conjunction with other agencies, carried out the evacuation as "a preventative measure."
An emergency rest centre was set up at Dawlish Leisure Centre, managed by Teignbridge Council, which took in all evacuated people.
A site visit was due to take place at 9am today, for a review of any damage to the sea wall.
Rresidents will not be allowed back before that is completed.
A police spokesman said: "There is no suggestion the containers placed as a temporary measure have been washed away. The sea wall may have suffered a further breach but this has not been confirmed."
