THERE is a greater chance of being involved in a driving incident in winter, the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has warned.

Extra care is needed when driving in snow and icy conditions, and drivers should ensure that they have warm clothes, sturdy footwear, ice scrapers and de-icer, blankets, a first aid kit, jump leads and atorch in their car.

They should also drive defensively by anticipating the road ahead through observing near, middle and far distance.

Drivers should keep well within the speed limit, avoid excessive steering and cornering at speed, and steer smoothly into bends and corners.

They should avoid excessive braking, brake gently and use low gears to engine brake, and avoid overtaking snow ploughs or gritting vehicles.
